Amethyst

Amethyst is a type of quartz crystal, chemical composition SiO2, with trace amounts of ferric Iron giving its purple color. The crystal system is Hexagonal, it has a harness of 7 (Moh's scale)and a specific gravity of 2.65. Quartz crystal is one of the most common minerals on our planet; comprising 12 % of the earth's crust. Found in locations from around the world, some of the most beautiful Amethysts are from the state of Minas Gerais (Brazil) and are found in geodes of volcanic origin.

Amethyst is a stone which symbolizes tranquility and harmony in religions of the world. It is used in the temples of Eastern countries to create an atmosphere of pious calm, it was one of the twelve sacred gems worn on the Jewish breastplate and it is the gem worn in the ring of Catholic Bishops and is hence often referred to as the "Bishop's Stone."

The Ancient Greeks believed that wine drunk out of an Amethyst studded cup was powerless to intoxicate.

Amethyst is one of the best stones to use for meditation. It aids in stilling the mundane thought processes that usually inundate the consciousness so that the mind can experience tranquility. It facilitates the transmutation of negative energy into positive energy on both the spiritual and etheric levels. It balances the energies of the intellectual, emotional, and physical bodies.
